Milwaukee NARI presented The Cabinet Maker with a gold award for best interior project in the $75,000 to $150,000 range. Projects are judged by how client needs were met, evidence of superior craftsmanship, innovative uses of materials and ability to overcome challenges.
Doug and Judy purchased a single story ranch to be their retirement home. They liked the overall layout, however, they wanted improvements to match their tastes and lifestyle. They desired consistent design elements to bring uniformity to the kitchen, family room, living room, dining room and hallway bathroom.
The kitchen layout was crowded and too isolated from the family room. A new cabinet layout increased countertop space and improved work flow. By relocating the sink, the wall between the kitchen and family room could be removed creating a better connection between the kitchen and family room.
The kitchen lacked a pantry. A custom pull-out pantry and spice cabinet was created. Innovative ideas like in-drawer knife storage and oversized drawers for pots and pans increased storage. Corner cabinets were built for the dining room allowing for storage of china and glassware.
Doug and Judy love books. A twelve-foot custom bookcase was created for the living room to house their extensive collection. In the kitchen, a small bookshelf was built into the base of the end cabinets for cookbooks.
Recessed dimmable LED can lights were installed in the kitchen, family room, living room and dry bar. LED Task lighting was added to the kitchen countertop area and pendant lights were placed over kitchen peninsula.
Updates were made to the hallway bathroom to better align with the rest of the house. This included a new color scheme, flooring and wall tile. A vanity was fabricated from rustic alder was matched with a mirror frame. New pendant lighting was installed.
Details matter. The Cabinet Maker custom milled bead board to avoid a striped look on the new bookshelf. Wood stain was custom matched. Cabinets incorporated hidden hinges with integrated soft-close hardware. Self, soft-close extensions were used on all drawers and pullouts. A micro-laminated beam allowed for removal of the load bearing wall between kitchen and family room.
By creating a truly custom design, Doug and Judy now have a beautiful first floor that fits their lifestyle. Milwaukee NARI felt this project was an award winner. We do, too.
